September 2012 Update

Zhongning County Zhouta Yu-Lang Hope Elementary School

Purpose of Visit: Project Completion

Grades: K-6 (7 classes total)

The new school building has been in use since October 2010, but portions of the stair tiles are already damaged. The playground/sports field still needs to be filled in and restored. The county committee has promised to help add/replace 20 computers as soon as possible.

Students

No. of Students: 210 (no boarding)

Students are hardworking and earnest. Their performance is ranked 2nd out of 7 schools in the township. 100% graduate on to either a township- or county-level middle school.

Teachers

No. of Teachers: 14

Teachers are dedicated to their work. Two teachers will be retiring at the end of the school year.

Buildings/Facilities

– 7 classrooms
– Library: ~5,800 books
– Computer Room: 8 computers
– Cafeteria: only for teachers’ use
– Restrooms: 12 squat-style toilets

Problems/Issues

Computers are old and need to be replaced urgently. 100 sets of classroom tables and chairs also need to be replaced.
