November 2015 Update

Zhongwei City Yongkang Chengnong Yu-Lang Hope Elementary School

Date of Visit: November 5, 2015

Purpose of Visit: Revisit

Grades: K-2 (3 classes total)

The student population has been steadily decreasing year after year as parents move away for work and take their children along with them. This is a very common occurrence in the six schools that we’ve visited this trip. As of now, the education authorities have not come up with any measures to deal with this issue. The five elementary schools and one kindergarten that we’ve visited all have modernized facilities. Aside from music, art, and PE classes, teacher qualifications all more or less meet the field’s standards.

Students

No. of Students: 82 (no boarding)

Above average performance.

Teachers

No. of Teachers: 3

The teachers perform well.

Buildings/Facilities

– 13 classrooms
– Library: 1,539 books
– Restrooms: 4 pit-style toilets

Problems/Issues

There aren’t enough functional classrooms (with adequate teaching equipment and materials), and thus the school is unable to provide classes to higher grade level students. 3rd through 6th graders are now sent to study at the school in nearby Fengtai. There is a lack of funding. The playground/sports field grounds are only partially concreted.
