Huangshan District Wushi Yu-Lang Hope School

Purpose of Visit: Project Completion

Grades: 1-9 (12 classes total)

The newly constructed school building has been in use since the beginning of the year, after winter break was over. The building includes 6 new classrooms especially for elementary-grade classes. The old classrooms previously occupied by the elementary-grade classes are now used for science classes. Also, with the additional space now available, teachers have more room to prepare their lessons.

Students

No. of Students: 418 (268 elementary + 150 junior high; 70 boarding)

About 70% of the students are conscientious and hardworking, while the remaining need some supervision and encouragement. The principal has set up a 30-minute daily lunchtime reading period which has helped foster student reading habits.

Teachers

No. of Teachers: 48 (24 elementary + 24 junior high)

Teachers are enthusiastic, and their performance is ranked 8th in Huangshan District.

Buildings/Facilities

– 6 new classrooms + 8 old classrooms
– Library: ~8,300 books
– Computer Room: 10 computers
– Cafeteria: Serves up to 160 people per sitting
– Restrooms: Flush-style toilets

Problems/Issues

There is a shortage of student desks and chairs, about 200 sets. About 30 computers needed for student use. Teachers also need about 25 additional computers to help them prepare for classes. Classrooms need audiovisual equipment.
