Yu’an District Shizigang Yu-Lang Hope School

Purpose of Visit: Project Completion

Grades: 1-9 (12 classes total)

The new school building has been in use since March 2012, but little has been done to maintain it so although new, it looks dirty and older than it should. The school grounds are covered with dust, broken glass, and garbage. Better management of the school grounds is much needed.

Students

No. of Students: 506 (no boarding)

Students are self-starters and are conscientious about their studies. Of the 45 junior highs in Yu’an District, the junior high division at this school is ranked 15th. 100% of elementary school students graduate on to junior high.

Teachers

No. of Teachers: 26

In a 2012 district evaluation, the school won an award of excellence for teachers’ performance.

– 12 classrooms
– Library: ~10,000 books
– Computer Room: 30 computers
– Restrooms: 18 squat-style toilets

Problems/Issues

Due to inadequate plumbing to remove sewage water, restrooms in the new building cannot be used. Desks and chairs are old, about 500 new replacement sets needed. The new building has no running water.
