March 2013 Update

Longyang District Wayao Laoying Yu-Lang Hope Elementary School

Date of Visit: March 29, 2013

Purpose of Visit: Project Completion

Grades: K-6 (13 classes total)

Although construction was completed in August 2012, the school did not start operating until February 25, 2013. The school staff have done well teaching the children proper etiquette. Students approached us and greeted us without prompting.

Students

No. of Students: 335 (117 boarding)

Students have a positive attitude towards learning. Their academic performance is ranked 3rd out of the 23 elementary schools in town. 100% graduate on to junior high.

Teachers

No. of Teachers: 18

Teachers are enthusiastic about education, and they’ve received numerous awards over the years.

Buildings/Facilities

– 12 classrooms
– Library: 5,000 books
– Computer Room: 20 computers (all old)
– Cafeteria: still under construction, scheduled to be completed by the end of June
– Restrooms: 28 pit-style toilets

Problems/Issues

Classroom desks and chairs are old, with about 200 replacement sets needed. 60 computers needed, and not enough multimedia equipment. In need of televisions and computer screens to help with lessons.
