March 2013 Update

Jinzhai County Zhangchong Yu-Lang Hope Middle School

Purpose of Visit: Project Completion

Grades: 7-9 (7 classes total)

The new school building has been in use since September 2012. During last year’s visit we found that the window sills on 2nd floor and up were too low and were concerned about possible issues with safety. The windows have now all been fitted with stainless steel safety bars.

Students

No. of Students: 329 (160 boarding)

Of the 45 junior highs in the county, student performance at this school is ranked above average. 70% of students graduate on to high school, and amongst these students about 30% will attend selective high school.

Teachers

No. of Teachers: 31

Teachers are dedicated and enthusiastic, and help tutor students during non-class hours.

Buildings/Facilities

– 7 classrooms
– Dormitories

– Computer Room: 50 computers, old and unusable
– Cafeteria: under construction, estimated to be ready for use by the end of April.
– Restrooms: 26 flush-style squat toilets

Problems/Issues

Urgent replacement of 50 computers. Lacking multimedia equipment in classrooms. Need more science equipment as well as library bookshelves.
