Haiyuan County Jiatang Zhutao Yu-Lang Hope Elementary School

Purpose of Visit: Project Completion

Grades: K-2 (3 classes total)

The new classrooms, campus enclosure wall, and leveled campus grounds are a world of difference compared to the old demolished facilities. The campus now feels spacious and the buildings are orderly. Although construction of the cafeteria and storage room are finished, electricity still needs to be hooked up so these facilities can be used. Replacements of the old classroom desks and chairs will be taken care by the Youth Foundation.

Students

No. of Students: 106 (no boarding)

This school is considered a rural “teaching site [教學點]”, and only has 3 classes with 1 for each grade. After finishing the 2nd-grade, students transfer on to Jiatang Township’s Central School to continue their studies.

Teachers

No. of Teachers: 3

Of the three teachers, only one is younger while the other two are older at around 45 years old.

Buildings/Facilities

– 3 classrooms
– Cafeteria: already constructed, but not in use yet
– Restrooms: 12 squat-style toilets

Problems/Issues

The playground/sports field is waiting to be concreted. The campus needs landscaping. Classroom desks and chairs are old.
